The first "Old Block" of vines at Coal Valley Vineyard, shown above, was first planted in 1991 by Drs. Margaret and Gradon Johnston who recognized a good vineyard site when they saw one. Eighteen years later the vineyard, with steep slopes facing due north, has a steady track record of producing award winning, elegant, true cool climate wines.
We purchased the property in late 1999 and, keeping it family owned and run, have been adding on since then. Twelve acres of vines are now planted out mainly to Pinot Noir but also to Riesling, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Our aim is to make the best wine we possibly can and know that good wine starts in the vineyard so all the vines are hand pruned, checked on daily and all the grapes are hand picked ensuring only the best quality fruit is used to produce the Coal Valley Vineyard wines.
Our cellar door is perched just above the Old Block, with sweeping views of the Coal River Valley, Pittwater and Barilla Bay. The cellar door will be closed this season from June 2010 but open between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
