The first "Old Block" of vines at Coal Valley Vineyard, shown above, was first planted in 1991 by Drs. Margaret and Gradon Johnston who recognized a good vineyard site when they saw one. Eighteen years later the vineyard, with steep slopes facing due north, has a steady track record of producing award winning, elegant, true cool climate wines.

We purchased the property in late 1999 and, keeping it family owned and run, have been adding on since then. Twelve acres of vines are now planted out mainly to Pinot Noir but also to Riesling, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Our aim is to make the best wine we possibly can and know that good wine starts in the vineyard so all the vines are hand pruned, checked on daily and all the grapes are hand picked ensuring only the best quality fruit is used to produce the Coal Valley Vineyard wines.

Perched just above the Old Block, with sweeping views of the Coal River Valley, Pittwater and Barilla Bay, the restaurant and cellar door make this a must visit vineyard on any trip to Hobart or South East Tasmania. We look forward to offering our wines to you and welcoming you at our cellar door to enjoy the wines, the beautiful views and the unique Tasmanian ambience at Coal Valley.

Smolt Restaurant in Salamanca Square are now running the Coal Valley Vineyard kitchen and restaurant. They happily cater for any group booking functions in the restaurant and offer delicious vineyard lunches on Saturdays and Sundays until the end of March 2010.
