Coal Valley Vineyard Chardonnay 2009

Review: James Halliday Wine Companion 2011:
Bright straw-green; a vibrant and intense wine; grapefruit, nectarine and grapefruit drive the palate with clarion clarity, oak a bystander; the '08 was good, this better. Screwcap.

Coal Valley Vineyard Pinot Noir 2008

Silver medal Hobart International Wine Show November 2009

$30/bottle or * with discount $27/bottle and $324/case (12 bottles)
Made from a blend of fruit from our Old Block and from the block planted in 2003 with a variety of clones providing interesting complexity in the wine.

Nick Stock The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010 "Score 92 Attractive light red fruits and a lifted perfume here; smells of maraschino cherry, really fresh and pure. Smooth entry on a nice slide of tannin, with raspberry fruit flavour, very even, also some chocolate - a nice fan of flavour and texture. Fresh through the finish, elegant and anchored.
"

Tim Goddard Cool Wines "This Pinot stands out from a bunch of excellent new Tasmanian Pinot releases. It has the hallmark of Coal Valley characters of vibrant sweet cherry and hints of mint and a really well structured palate with attractive depth of fruit. 5 stars out of 6. 13.5% alc/vol. 92 points. Drink to 2015"

James Halliday Wine Companion 2011:
Colour good; supple, elegant, fluid, seamless line; red and black cherry fruit; fine tannins; oak good. At this stage, a better pinot than Old Block. Screwcap.

Coal Valley Vineyard OLD BLOCK Pinot Noir 2008

Bronze medal Hobart International Wine Show November 2009

$45/bottle or * with discount $40.50/bottle and $486/case (12 bottles)

Made with fruit sourced exclusively from what we call our Old Block. We spend a lot of time tending to these vines reducing the yield by dropping a fair bit of fruit for this wine which has received great reviews from "A class act" to "A beauty"

Nick Stock The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010 "Score 94 This has bright fragrance and a darker side to the nose, in the richer, dark spectrum, blue and purple fruits and some plums too. Great anchor on the palate; it flows with impressive acid/ tannin balance and there's a convincing resolve through the back. Terrific poise - a class act"

Graeme Phillips The Mercury June 2009 "Darker plum colours and a seductively rich, velvety and multi-layered palate with smoky, foresty earth and mushroomy notes underlining the black plum fruit flavours, the palate full, soft and round already showing a lovely depth and developed richness with ripe and ultra-fine tannins on the long, full flavoured finish. A beauty" Maximum five out of five bottle rating. 13.5%

Bright, deep red-purple; abundant dark plum fruit on the bouquet and palate; substantial tannins; needs time to soften and lengthen. Screwcap.

Coal Valley Vineyard Cabernet Merlot 2007
$27/bottle or * with discount $24.30/bottle and $291.60/case (12 bottles)
Todd only makes four barrels of this cabernet sauvignon and merlot blend a year and being made in such small quantities uses the old basket press so only soft tannin extraction. Grown in the heart of the vineyard where the heat is trapped and the micro climate more suitable for ripening this particular grape in Tasmania. Dense crimson-purple, fragrant blackcurrant, cassis aromas with a powerful mid-palate. 13.5%

Coal Valley Vineyard Sparkling Chardonnay 2007
$39/bottle or * with discount $35.10/bottle and $421.20/case (12 bottles)
Intense apple, melon and citrus on a long and even palate. Very good balance with fine bead. More complex toasty yeast characters just starting to develop but overall delicious, crisp, light and refreshing. Made with 100% estate grown Chardonnay fruit this is a true blanc de blanc - the lightest and most refreshing of all bubbles, just as right for cold winter night celebrations as for mid-summer lunches.
