On the splendid island of Tasmania there is a vineyard that you must visit . . .

Less than 15 minutes drive from the heart of Hobart on the road to the historic village of Richmond, the Coal Valley Vineyard is spectacularly situated with five hectares of north facing vines on steep slopes overlooking Barilla Bay and Pittwater, the estuary of the Coal River.

Our wines are produced from a single site vineyard which is hand pruned and grapes that are hand picked and each bunch hand selected. Particularly low yields are maintained to allow for the development of intense varietal characteristics in the wine. The Pinot Noir is cropped at 5 tonnes/hectare and the Riesling at 7 tonnes/hectare. Three hectares are planted to Pinot Noir and the remaining two hectares are planted to Riesling, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The original vineyard is now 17 years old and and an additional two hectares planted in 2004 will produce this vintage in 2009 for the first time so production will be increasing for the next eight years.

Owner Todd Goebel makes the Cabernet Merlot blend and the other varities are made by local contract wine makers Frogmore Creek.

The cellar door is open most days. For appointments please call 03.6248 5367 and we welcome your visit.
